Fifteen

Seventeen bells chimed just as we turned the last corner onto the Maslans’ street… which still looked more like an alleyway to me, given how close and tight all these damned buildings felt.

The sun was slowly creeping downward toward the horizon, the angle of the light creating an intricate pattern of shadows all around us as the air began to cool down, at least compared to the warmth we had enjoyed at midday.

We were on the other side of the Western Garrison Quarter from the garrison’s front gate, just a few streets away from where Alli’s Aunt Helga had her apothecary shop.

“I’m so hungry,” Alli said as she led the five of us across the street, briefly pausing to allow a cart with an elderly driver to pass by. “I can almost smell Momma’s cooking from here.”

She and Jessa had assumed their usual place at the front of our little formation, leading me and Ria as we strode arm in arm. Eevi maintained her role as the most non-servanty servant by trailing just behind me and my little half-fae as we stepped over the large gap in the center of the road, which I had learned was the middle-age equivalent of a sewer.

“Ugh,” I muttered, looking back at the disgusting gutter and, quite literally, at the crap floating down the center of the channel. “I almost just lost my appetite. How the hell are you guys unphased by that?”

The girls chuckled, Jessa damn near snorting in response.

“You get used to it… mostly,” the blonde shrugged. “But I would give anything for it to be kept underground like you described, where you’re from.”

“Most of it floats downhill at night when they open the sluice gates. It all gets pushed into the Aloham River,” Eevi said helpfully as she pointed at the distant hill at the far end of the Westgate district, where an old water tower was watching over the city.

“Remind me to never go swimming in that river,” I said, shivering at the thought. Suddenly reconsidering that idea I had a few weeks back of jumping into the bottom of it from my embarrassment with Alli. “Or drink from it.”

“Only drink the well water on the west side of the city,” Alli said with a nod. “Or the river water sourced from the north of the city. They have an aqueduct on the east side of Aloham that comes from the north. That water is much safer.”

“I remember seeing those when I first got here,” I said, glancing upward in thought. “Why do they have an aqueduct there, but not on this side? All I see is that water tower.”

“That side of town was originally a marshland if my father is to be believed,” Eevi supplied. “It’s also much lower. Wells wouldn’t work over there. It’s too salty. This side here is where the original city was built and has plenty of fresh water below it. That tower has a pump in it, which is turned by horses every day to refill it.
